High School
The youth ministry here at SRCC incorporates all middle school and high school
students and exists to encourage and equip youth to love and serve Jesus Christ through
relationships, outreach and training.
Weekly gatherings:
- Sunday School - Each Sunday morning at 11am, our high school youth meet to
discuss the issues of our faith and how to apply them to our everyday lives.
- X-cell - Monday night at 6pm is our main youth group time for our high school
youth. Gathering at homes with youth from different youth groups from around Rochester,
we eat supper together, share a brief devotion on the Biblical book we are studying and
then break into small groups where we discuss the devotion and pray for each other.
Monthly events:
- T.I.A.: Teens In Action - One Saturday each month is set aside for an opportunity
to put our faith into action in our community. Whether it is working at the Channel 1 food
bank, the Salvation Army Thrift Store or taking part in our church's SWAT team (Service
With A Tool), our youth learn that they have much to offer this community, most importantly
the love of Jesus Christ shown in a practical way.
- Special events - It is important for us to develop Godly friendships both with
other teens and with caring adults, so each month we get together just to have fun and get
to know each other better. These special events are less frequent than those of the middle
school youth because of busy schedules and because we do more yearly trips.
Yearly trips:
- See You At The Pole - Well, it's not a trip but it is a yearly event for us.
The third Wed. in September is set aside for an international rally at all middle and high
schools around the world. Youth gather around their school's flagpole for 1/2 hour before
school to pray for their school, friends and country. The prayer is student led but
adults and teachers can join the prayer time. Then that night, all Rochester youth gather
for a SYATP rally. For an hour, we celebrate the morning, worshipping, giving testimony
to what God did through the prayer time and continuing the prayer from the morning.
- Chicago Extravaganza - Each November, we travel to Chicago for 3 days. We
visit North Park University and get a tour of the school, take the El to downtown Chicago
and take in the sites (and some Chicago Style Pizza!) and then spend all day Saturday
working for the underprivileged in downtown Chicago. On Sunday morning, we experience
a very different worship style to stretch our understanding of worship and then head home.
- 30 Hour Famine - World Vision's 30 Hour Famine is a time to both learn about
world poverty and hunger and to do something about it. Our teens raise funds for the famine
and then get together for 30 hours to study and learn about world hunger while going
without food for the 30 hours themselves, just to get a tiny taste of what hunger really
feels like. With the famine happening from noon on Sat. to 6pm on Sun., we have the
opportunity to lead the worship service, speak at sunday school and take part in a canned
food drive to help alleviate hunger in our local area. We break the fast with soup and
sandwiches at 6pm on Sun. evening.
- ATF: Acquire the Fire - In the early spring, we drive to Minneapolis
for a 1 1/2 day gathering sponsored by TeenMania ministries. Meeting
at the Target Center, this time is filled with nationally renowned speakers,
bands and worship leaders. Here, our teens get pumped up about taking
the good news of Jesus Christ back to their schools and friends to change
the world for the better.
- MOVE: Mission Outreach Venture and Experience - In April, we
join together with youth groups from around the NorthWest Conference
in Minneapolis for a weekend of service and praise. We hear from a speaker
and discuss poverty in small groups. Then on Saturday, we go into Minneapolis
to spend the day making a difference in the lives of the underprivileged.
- CHIC: Covenant High In Christ - Every three years, thousands
of Covenant high school youth from around the country gather at the
University of Tennessee for a week like no other. Through worship, seminars,
small groups, speakers and bands, our youth are exposed to the life-changing
love of God in a new way. Focused on taking youth another step deeper
in their faith, CHIC gives them experiences that they will not get anywhere
else. The afternoons are open for excursions (white water rafting, a
day at Pidgeon Forge, go karts, mountain biking or hiking...) or just
hanging around campus and meeting new people. CHIC: No Ordinary Day
is happening this summer, 2006.
- Group Workcamps - On a non-CHIC summer, our high school youth travel across
the country to attend a Group Workcamp. Gathering with 300 teenagers from around the
country, we go out in groups of 5 to different worksites to build, paint and refurbish
homes for people who otherwise could not afford it. At the school each night, Group
staff lead worship experiences to help our youth see that helping is not just fixing
up a home but is bringing the love of Jesus Christ into the lives of people He loves.
